This page explains how the Double Opt-In (DOI) Process works, how a “single” Opt-In can result in multiple Opt-Ins from various vendors, and how all of this complies with GDPR.
So Many Subscribers, So Little Time
I think I am save to assume that anyone reading this is currently receiving emails containing an unsubscribe link at the bottom. I further assume that everyone has at least once received an email with an unsubscribe link, wondering how and when the subscription actually happened.
Just about everyone has at least once unknowingly subscribed to receiving promotional emails in form of a newsletter, something easily identifiable by the sometimes infamous unsubscribe link. In many cases the emails come from reputable companies, so it is assumed the permission to send these emails must have been given without realizing.
While harsh fines in the millions of dollars have been handed out for breaking Privacy Protection Laws (e.x. GDPR) in recent years, sharing your data has actually become more wide spread than ever. Especially during any form of sign-up, where you provide your email address, chances are high you’ll get subscribed to one or multiple email lists.
Most Internet marketers use DOI-Processes to build their email lists. The successful ones also sell your subscription to 3rd parties. A DOI process can easily be designed and worded to make you agree to all of it, without understanding to what extend your data will be used and monetized.
What is a DOI Process?
A DOI is a subscription process where the subscriber has to perform two separate actions in order to confirm the subscription. Most commonly these two actions are filling out a web form and clicking on a link in a confirmation email.
