In the world of email, the term transparent coupling refers to how people become confirmed subscribers. In this case, the subscription is made as part of a (business) transaction between the two parties. The classic example, as described below, is to offer a “free” e-book in exchange for a subscription.
Why use Transparent Coupling?
In short: It is more effective than the traditional newsletter sign-up.
Most newsletter sign-up forms use the traditional Double-Opt-In (DOI) process, where people enter their email address in a form, and have to click on a link in a Confirmation Email in order to complete their sign-up.
The biggest factor against the traditional newsletter sign-up: People must have a genuine interest in a newsletter, without having read one.
People will happily agree to just about anything, as long as whatever is offered is worth more to them than what has to be given in return, and Transparent Coupling means using a person’s interest in something to get them to sign-up.
The Classic: Product/Service for a subscription
The easiest way to gain more subscribers is offering something like an e-book, a brochure, a special discount coupon, or a service in exchange for them becoming a subscriber.
